Easy as HGV’s Managing Director, Tom McGhie, gives his insight into the findings of last month’s RHA report on attracting, training and retaining new drivers:

“It’s clear from the latest Road Haulage Association report that recruitment challenges in logistics, especially for HGV drivers, are far from over. While post-pandemic initiatives helped stabilise numbers, the report highlights major vulnerabilities in driver supply.

The stats speak for themselves: just 2.2% of HGV drivers are under 24, while 35% are between 50-59. Compare that to the general workforce, where age distribution is far more balanced, and it’s a serious red flag. With haulage demands set to rise, the RHA estimates the industry needs 40,000 new HGV drivers every year for the next five years—an enormous 200,000 in total.

At Easy as HGV, we train and support new drivers from all backgrounds—career changers, school leavers, and everyone in between. We see first hand the roadblocks stopping people from entering the industry. These barriers need urgent action from both the government and the sector.

The key issues:

  • High insurance costs for young drivers: The gap between new HGV licences issued and actual drivers on the road is worrying. High insurance premiums for under 25s make it more difficult for them to secure jobs. A government backed subsidy scheme would help reduce costs and bring in fresh talent.
  • Poor rest stop conditions: 60% of former drivers say better roadside facilities would improve retention. Last year’s £20m government investment in better rest areas was a good start, but cleaner, safer, and more comfortable stops must become the standard, throughout the UK.
  • Changing perceptions of HGV careers: Young people need to see HGV driving for what it is; a career with job security, progression, and flexibility. A national campaign highlighting these benefits, combined with targeted training and upskilling, could help reshape the industry’s image and attract new talent.

The RHA report makes one thing clear; there’s no quick fix. The industry must create a steady pipeline of new drivers to prevent future shortages. Engagement and retention will be key, and at Easy as HGV, we’re committed to being part of the solution.”
