How hard is it to pass HGV test?

If you’ve already passed a standard drivers test, then you understand the format, and the kind of things expected of you. Passing your HGV test isn’t too difficult, but you do need to be able to concentrate, stay calm, and be confident in your knowledge and your ability behind the wheel. If you’ve trained with a good school, this shouldn’t be a problem.

What qualifications do I need to be a HGV instructor?

If you want to become a HGV instructor, then you first need to have a HGV license yourself, and have held it for at least 3 years. This allows you to supervise a learner driver. You don’t need to take any formal training, or be registered in order to teach someone to drive a HGV, but courses are available.

Can you go straight for Class 1 HGV?

If you want to be a Class 1 driver, you need to have passed an extra practical test, on top of your Driver CPC and Cat C. Passing this test adds a category E to your licence, and shows you are a committed and driven professional. You can do this extra test right away with your Cat C – there’s no need to wait.

How much do HGV drivers earn in UK?

The amount HGV drivers ear in the UK varies, but a typical starting salary is between £19-24k for a newly qualified driver. If you have more experience, or a range of different categories of HGV license, then you can earn significantly more – sometimes up to £40K a year depending on your employer.
