What is the C+E licence?

Category C+E, also known as Class 1, is the highest HGV licence category available in the UK. It covers articulated lorries (artics) and drawbar combinations, commonly known as wagon and drag.

C+E qualified drivers can operate the largest vehicles on UK roads, including curtain-siders, refrigerated trailers, and container units. This licence opens the door to long-distance haulage, international distribution, port and container work and specialist freight roles.

C+E drivers command higher salaries than Cat C drivers, with starting rates typically from £38,000 to £50,000 per year depending on sector and employer.

Is a combined Cat C and C+E package right for me?

The combined fast track package is designed for candidates who want to reach the highest HGV licence category in one efficient programme, without the cost and time of returning for a second course later.

It is particularly suitable if you:

  • Are new to HGV driving and want to go straight for a Class 1 licence
  • Want to qualify for the highest-earning HGV roles as quickly as possible
  • Are looking for maximum flexibility in the types of HGV work available to you
  • Want to complete both qualifications in a single managed process

Since the 2021 rule change, candidates no longer need to hold a Category C licence before beginning C+E training. This means both licences can be pursued in a single combined programme, saving time and money.

How do we help you find your first Class 1 HGV job?

Once you have passed your Cat C and C+E tests, our recruitment team provides dedicated job search support to help you find the right HGV driving role as quickly as possible.

Class 1 (C+E) drivers are among the most in-demand in the UK logistics sector. We help you take advantage of that demand by:

  • Building your HGV driver recruitment profile, highlighting both licence categories and any relevant experience
  • Rewriting your CV or helping you create your first one, tailored for Class 1 driving roles
  • Writing your covering letter
  • Supporting your job applications and connecting you with employers actively recruiting C+E drivers

Job search support is included as part of your training package.

What is the earning potential of a Class 1 HGV driver?

Category C+E (Class 1) drivers are among the highest earning professional drivers in the UK. Typical salaries by experience level:

  • Newly qualified Cat C+E driver: £38,000 to £42,000 per year
  • Experienced Class 1 driver: £42,000 to £50,000 per year
  • Specialist or international haulage roles: £45,000 plus, with additional allowances and bonuses

Many Class 1 roles also include overnight allowances, performance bonuses, paid breaks and employer-sponsored CPC hours, which add significant value on top of the base salary.

Compared to a Category C (Class 2) driver starting at around £28,000 to £38,000, the C+E upgrade delivers a meaningful increase in earning potential, making the combined fast track package a strong return on investment.

What is included in the Easy As HGV package?

Our Cat C+E upgrade package includes everything you need to go from existing Cat C holder to fully licensed Class 1 driver:

  • Practical training (4 days) with DVSA-approved instructors in a full-length artic
  • DVSA Cat C+E practical test booking
  • Post-qualification recruitment support including CV writing and job search

Everything is coordinated by your dedicated Course Coordinator from start to finish, with no hidden extras.

How long does the Cat C+E training take?

The practical training element of the combined package takes approximately 4 days in total. The full process from initial enquiry to holding the licence, typically takes around 6 weeks. Easy As HGV pre-books key stages to reduce waiting time wherever possible.

Can I go straight from a car licence to Cat C+E?

If you hold a full UK car driving licence but no Category C licence, the combined fast track Cat C and C+E package is the best route for you rather than this upgrade course. Our fast track package covers both licences in one programme.

This upgrade course is designed for drivers who already hold a Category C licence and want to progress to Class 1. If you are unsure which route applies to you, call our team on 0800 970 8447 and we will point you in the right direction.

What is the difference between Cat C and Cat C+E?

Category C (Class 2) covers rigid vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, such as lorries, tippers and box trucks.

Category C+E (Class 1) covers articulated lorries and drawbar combinations, commonly known as artics or wagon and drag. C+E is the highest HGV licence category available and is required to drive the largest vehicles on UK roads. Holding both licences gives you access to the full range of professional HGV driving roles.

What happens after I pass my Cat C+E test?

Once you have passed your practical test, your Class 1 licence is issued by the DVLA. Our recruitment team then works with you to find suitable employment, including CV writing, covering letter support and connections to employers actively recruiting Cat C+E drivers. Job search support is included in your training package at no extra cost.
