
HGV Driver Training FAQs
If you’re looking to start your career as an HGV driver, congratulations! It’s a fantastically rewarding career, and amid the chaos of Covid-19, it has been proven that the people driving HGVs are an essential part of keeping our country going. But you probably have some questions – about the job, the training, or what your life will look like when you take on this new role in the world. So today, we wanted to provide you with some answers to the most common questions, and hopefully help set you on the right track for your training.

How Old Do I Have To Be To Drive A HGV?
Anyone over the age of 18 can train to be a HGV driver. All you need to have is a full driver’s licence.
Where Will I Do My Training?
Where you do your training will depend on which training school you choose. There will be a mix of elements as well, so some of the training can be done online or via video call, or by taking practice tests on your computer at home. In-person training is usually conducted at site of the training school, and the driving practice is done in the surrounding areas. There will be a mix of driving on normal roads, and learning things like reversing and manoeuvres at an appropriate off-road location.
What’s The Process?
While the process can look a little daunting, in reality getting your HGV license is quite simple. With us, you will go through a 5 step process to get you on the road:
- Register for a course and receive your starter pack. This pack includes all of your license application and medical forms, along with access to our online theory revision portal.
- You attend a basic medical exam and send off the forms for a provisional HGV licence (a pre-paid envelope for this is in your pack.
- Once you have your provisional license, we book in your theory test for you, and support you in your revision using our online tool.
- Congratulations, you’d passed your theory! Now we get you driving, with a 4 day intensive course with one of our experienced HGV instructors.
- Once you’re trained up, we guide you through your practical tests, and get you on the road! We can even help you in finding a new job once you’re ready to go.
How Many Tests Do I Have To Do?
Technically, 4. There are 2 parts to your theory test (multiple choice and hazard perception), and there are 2 parts to your practical test as well. Don’t worry, we will guide you through the process at every step.
How Long Does It Take To Get Qualified?
How long it takes you to get your HGV license depends on the training school you choose. With Easy as HGV, it takes just 4 days, with our intensive courses designed to get you qualified and on the road quickly. You will need to do a few things before you start your 4 day course, but a member of staff will go through this with you, or you can look it up in this handy video.
How Much Does It Cost?
Good quality HGV training doesn’t have to be a huge investment, although some training schools might tell you otherwise! How Much Could I Earn As A HGV Driver?
The earning potential of HGV drivers used to be fairly low, but in the last 10 years it’s grown considerably, and HGV driving is now a very rewarding career both personally and financially. The average HGV driver with a C+E licence can earn up to £32K a year. We do expect the salaries for HGV drivers to grow even more over the next few years as well, thanks to the increase in online purchases. Which CPC Do I Need?
The Driver CPC is an essential part of being a HGV driver – you can’t drive without it. So if you’re not in possession of a Driver Qualification Card (DQC), then you will need to take the Driver CPC initial qualification. This includes a theory test and a practical demonstration test. Once you have this qualification, you then have 5 years to complete your 35 hours periodic training locally to you. That’s just 7 hours per year. And since periodic training is ‘attendance only’, you can’t fail it.
