After deciding you want an HGV licence, looking into what’s actually involved in the process can be off-putting. There are DVLA forms, a medical, two theory papers, Driver CPC modules, an off-road manoeuvre test and an on-road test. Every quote is built differently, and it’s hard to tell whether the price in front of you covers the whole process or only the driving part.
We’ve been coordinating HGV training since 2008 through more than 92 trusted locations across the UK, and the question we’re asked most is what a package actually includes. Below you’ll find every stage laid out, the parts often missing from cheaper quotes, and how to work out whether a package suits you.
What do you get in a full HGV training package?

Your provisional entitlement and D4 medical
Before you can get behind the wheel of a lorry, you need provisional HGV entitlement added to your car licence, which means a D2 application form and a D4 medical report signed off by a doctor. We oversee the forms, show you how to complete them and explain how to arrange your medical, so paperwork isn’t what holds up your start date.
Theory test preparation and Driver CPC Module 2
Your HGV theory test comes in two parts, multiple choice questions and hazard perception, and you’ll also sit Driver CPC Module 2, the case studies paper. A package includes your theory revision material and the bookings, so you revise the right content and sit each paper in an order that keeps your training moving.
Practical training and every test booking
This is the part most people picture. You’ll learn with DVSA-approved instructors at a training location near you, working towards Module 3a, the off-road manoeuvre with its S-shaped reverse and, on trailer tests, the coupling and uncoupling procedure, then Module 3b on the road. Your Driver CPC Module 4 practical demonstration is booked alongside them. Whether you take Category C or go straight to Category C+E, the dates are arranged as one sequence rather than something you chase week by week.
Support once you’ve qualified
A licence on its own doesn’t pay wages. Your package includes CV help and access to the employers we work with through our HGV driving jobs service, plus a route back to us for the 35 hours of periodic CPC training you need every five years to keep your Driver Qualification Card valid.
What isn’t always included in a cheaper quote
Comparing HGV training prices is difficult, because two quotes rarely cover the same ground. A low headline figure often buys driving hours and nothing else. Before you book, check for these:
- Driver CPC Modules 2 and 4, which you legally need to drive professionally
- DVSA test fees for each module
- Extra training and a re-test if your first attempt doesn’t go your way
- Any help with finding work afterwards

Is an HGV training package worth the money?
For most people coming into the industry from a car licence, yes, and the reason has more to do with time than price.
Booked separately, each stage waits on the one before it. Your medical can’t happen until your forms are in, practical training can’t start until your provisional entitlement lands, and your test date depends on what’s free when you’re ready. Every gap is time you’re not earning as a driver. A package books the sequence up front, and one point of contact means you’re not the one ringing round to find out what happens next.
Since 2008 we’ve watched where new drivers get stuck, and it’s almost never the driving. The sticking points are the paperwork, the running order of the modules and knowing which test to book when.
A package makes less sense if you already have your theory certificate, medical and CPC modules sorted and only need driving hours. Our advisors will say so if that’s your situation.
What’s the easiest way to get through HGV training?
The easiest route is the one where somebody else holds the plan. Pick your licence category, hand over the admin, and put your energy into revision and driving hours instead of scheduling.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Category C licence before I can train for C+E?
No. Since 15 November 2021 you can train straight from a car licence to Category C+E without passing your Category C test first. It saves time and a set of test fees, though it’s a bigger step, so talk it through with an advisor.
Does an HGV training package include the Driver CPC?
Yes. A full package includes the Initial Driver CPC, taken as Module 2 (case studies) and Module 4 (practical demonstration) alongside your theory and practical tests. You need it to drive professionally, then 35 hours of periodic CPC training every five years to keep your Driver Qualification Card valid.
