If you’re thinking of starting HGV training, or are already enrolled on a course, it’s likely that your mind will be on tests. These are probably the most daunting part of the process. The more you think about it, the scarier it becomes. However, there are some really simple ways to ease the process, and chatting to other HGV drivers or your HGV training advisors is just one of them. At Easy as HGV, we know that driving tests can feel like a huge undertaking, so these are our most straightforward, real world tips to stay on top of your HGV tests.
HGV test: parts broken down
First of all, let’s chat through the parts of the HGV testing process, whether you’re learning category C driving or category C+E. There are lots of parts (5 in total) and that can make it feel overwhelming. This need not be the case, though.
Part 1. Theory tests
The first part of your HGV test is the theory test. Within this test, you’ll answer a hazard perception section using video footage which assesses your understanding of HGV operating regulations. You’ll also answer a multiple choice section which will cover such topics as road signs, driving hours, and safety regulations. Your pass certificate is valid for 2 years.
Part 2. Case studies
This is worked through on a computer, similar to the theory test, and you must have passed this stage before taking practical tests. Your pass certificate is again valid for 2 years. You’ll be presented with 7 case study situations and answer 6-8 multiple choice questions on each scenario.
Part 3a. Off road exercises
This practical part tests your ability to manoeuvre the vehicle. It consists of around 30 minutes of driving and you must have passed part 2 before you can take this test.
Part 3b. On road driving
You must have passed part 3a a maximum of 6 months before taking this part of the test, and you must take your pass certificate to the test. It will involve answering some safety questions and around an hour of practical driving.
Part 4. Practical demonstration
This is the most comprehensive test and covers 5 topics of the CPC syllabus. You’ll need to demonstrate your understanding of driving, safety, and the requirements of professional HGV driving. A pass is at least 15 out of 20 marks in each of the 5 areas.
CPC
The most important thing to remember here is that the CPC isn’t a whole other test. Passing your CPC qualification is achieved on completion of the testing stages. You will, however, need to maintain your CPC qualification with 35 hours of study over every 5 year period. It’s important to remember that there is no ongoing test, just module learning, which can be done remotely or in a classroom.
Your simple HGV pass tips
There’s no single thing that will ensure a pass in your HGV tests. Every driver is an individual, and our skill at Easy as HGV is in understanding this and offering what our trainees need to achieve success.
Chatting to experienced drivers
Have conversations about driving practice, road conditions, test experiences. The more you communicate with others about the HGV driving world, the more information you’ll glean. These conversations have two effects: they offer a broader knowledge base, and they demystify the test experience, making it more accessible and less daunting. Our instructors are skilled and experienced. By enrolling in our courses, you’ll be able to tap into that knowledge both with formal sessions and informal chats.
The value of a training provider
An experienced and reputable provider like Easy as HGV can make all the difference in your preparation and confidence levels. We offer comprehensive training tailored to your needs, ensuring you receive the best guidance and support throughout the process. Beyond your training sessions, our telephone advisors are always in hand with practical advice or just a chat. This way, you can be confident that you’re not missing any parts of the training process.
Additional resources
From online learning to practise papers, it’s worth making the most of all of the resources that your training provider can offer. Learning in a classroom environment is great here because you can benefit from the support of peers who are at the same stage as you. By comparing notes or chatting about HGV driving experiences, you can support each other through the process.
Study planning
Don’t forget that there’s no time too early to start theory based learning. You can start reading study materials before you’ve even received your provisional licence. It’s important to stick to a plan and establish a consistent study routine. Dedicate regular time to review study materials, take practice tests, and identify areas where you need improvement. Join study groups or online forums to connect with other learners and share insights. Collaborative learning can enhance your understanding and retention of key concepts.
Extra practice
Preparation is key to acing the practical test. Practise your driving skills in various conditions and scenarios, focusing on areas such as reversing, parking, and vehicle control. Developing a strong sense of spatial awareness and mastering vehicle handling are essential. Always prioritise safety and adherence to road rules during practice sessions. Most importantly, listen to the stories and tips that your experienced instructor offers during your training sessions. Their lived experience is a huge resource to learn from, and informal chats can be as valuable as formal HGV driving instructions.
Avoiding CPC lapses
Maintaining your CPC certification is critical for your professional driving career. Keep track of your training hours with a formal log and ensure you complete the required courses within a manageable timeframe. Don’t leave it all to the end of the 5 year period! At Easy as HGV, we support our drivers beyond their initial pass by helping with ongoing CPC training too. If you want to stay ahead, try to keep informed about changes in regulations and industry trends to ensure your skills remain relevant and up to date. This will make your required training sessions more easily digestible.
Remember, success in HGV tests isn’t just about ticking boxes and memorising information. It’s about embracing the process to become a skilled and well rounded HGV driver. This is why we support our drivers with formal information and informal chatting and support. With everyone treated as an individual, the path to success is that bit more achievable.
