8th National Pay Survey Published
Jul 1, 2008

The eighth annual joint Incomes Data Services and Road Haulage Association national survey of pay and conditions for drivers and distribution workers has just been published. The key findings of the survey are:

the median settlement level for 2007 for drivers is 4.5%, compared with 3.5% for the whole economy;
the average hourly rate for LGV driver licence category C+E is £8.09 an hour, with gross average weekly earnings of £477.91;
the average hourly rate for LGV driver licence category C is £7.87 an hour, with gross average weekly earnings of £428.62;

In addition to pay, the report examines detail of bonuses and overtime payments, recruitment and retention issues, provision of driver training, sick pay and absence management procedures and provision of pensions for drivers within the road transport industry. The report also looks at the profile of the workforce, including the employment of agency drivers, drivers from EU accession countries and female drivers.

Commenting, RHA's Director of Employment Affairs, Ruth Pott, said “The above inflation pay settlements indicate pressure on the availability of suitability qualified drivers, despite the widespread use of Polish and other Eastern European drivers. The cost of employing drivers in the haulage sector has risen even more steeply, due to increasing regulation, health and safety and training requirements.”

Copies of the Pay in road transport and distribution 2007/08 report, priced £295.00, can be obtained directly from IDS on 0845 600 9355 or by visiting www.incomesdata.co.uk.
