HGV Jobs in the West Midlands

The West Midlands is well known for its contribution to the Industrial revolution in this country, nowadays it is no longer an industrial region but has a large food and manufacturing presence.

west midlandsAbout the West Midlands

The West Midlands is made up of Herefordshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire and West Midlands (county). It is home to the second most populated city in the UK, Birmingham.

When looking at the West Midlands you may come across a subsection within the region called the West Midlands conurbation (often referred to as Black Country.) This contains the cities of Birmingham and Wolverhampton as well as the large towns of Sutton Coldfield, Dudley, Walsall, West Bromwich, Solihull, Stourbridge and Halesowen. Not to be confused with the region or any of the geographical counties, it is its own area and has its own statistics.

Birmingham and the Black Country are most well-known as the starting points of the Industrial revolution in the UK. The most famous attributes being; having the first iron-framed building in the world in 1797, the first self-propelled locomotive to run on rails in 1803, producing the glass for The Crystal Palace in 1851, producing the first man-made plastic in 1856 and installing the world’s first transatlantic telegraph cable in 1857.

No longer known as a highly industrial region; food production is now most prominent in the West Midlands. The area boasts companies such as:

  • Dairy Crest (Milk and Cathedral City Cheese)
  • Kraft (Cadbury & Bourneville chocolate)
  • Premier Food (Mr Kipling slices and Angel Delight)
  • Lea & Perrins (Worcestershire Sauce)
  • Muller Dairy (Muller yoghurt products)

As well as food there are a large amount of manufactured goods produced by well-known brands in the West Midlands. Some of the brands in this area include:

  • Wedgewood
  • Michelin Tyres
  • Royal Doulton
  • Goodyear Tyres
  • Emma Bridgewater
  • Bosch group (Boiler Production)

Ocado and Sainsburys (TU clothing) have their main distribution hubs in the West Midlands, close to the M5 and M6 these distribution centres have an almost direct route to the north or south of the country. These road links are extremely accommodating to the haulage industry, with direct access to areas such as Manchester and Bristol they make up a corridor for the western part of the UK, meaning that long haul deliveries become easier and faster.

Types of HGV jobs available in the West Midlands

With so many goods being manufactured and food being produced in the region the demand for HGV drivers is high. Just a quick search on our jobs page will show you just how many vacancies there are out there. With so many big cities in one area it should come as no surprise that the logistics industry is constantly growing in the area.

Chilled distribution is a key contributor for an area producing so much food. A large number of companies have one main production factory situated in the West Midlands which produces goods the entire of the UK. Working with a refrigerated vehicle is not a specialist licence but is a skill. You will need to be up on your knowledge and eager to learn to get into a role like this. Having one on your CV will be invaluable. If you can deliver goods from a refrigerated vehicle, which takes a lot of organisation and paperwork, then you will have no problems delivering normal dry goods.

Due to so many production plants being situated in this area there is a large demand for long haul drivers. For Category C+E (Class 1) drivers, tramping work is extremely common and available. This work is normally run on a four days on, 4 days off shift pattern which can work out great. If you don’t mind staying overnight in your cab for a few nights you end up with a mini break every week. You could go away on short break holidays, visit family, attend events, and that’s all before you book any of your regular holiday time!

As well as the smaller manufacturing plants there are also large parts factories in the area which require constant collection of finished products to be transferred to another factory for the next stage of production, these include:

  • Holden Aluminium Technologies (sports car chassis)
  • Denso Manufacturing UK Ltd (car air-conditioning systems)
  • Grainger & Worrall (cast aluminium and iron engine blocks)
  • Doncasters (aerospace components)
  • Converteam (variable speed drives)
  • BMW (four-cylinder engine plant)
  • Concentric (oil and water pumps for small diesel engines)

These companies generally require their products to be safely and securely transported to a secondary factory in another area to be fitted into another stage of production. If the factories are owed by the same company they tend not to be too far from each other so they can generally be completed as daily drops and therefore have much more standardised shift times. This is extremely helpful if you are trying to fit your work around your family life.

What sort of salary can I expect in the West Midlands?

There is so much going on in the West Midlands that the variety of work available is huge. You tend to find that the salaries do vary depending on industry however the overall average salary is desirable. If you can do it, you will generally find that overnight work tends to pay more as this can involve overnight stops and has less desirable hours than that of standard multi drop or short haul deliveries.

To give you an idea of what you could be earning driving HGV or LGV’s in the West Midlands, we’ve picked out a few jobs which represent the sort of work and pay scales available.

  • C+E Driver – Chilled Distribution – £145 per day
  • Cat C Driver – Delivery driver – £27,000 p/a
  • Cat C Driver – Retail Driver – £12 per hour
  • C+E Driver – Night Deliveries – £15 per hour
